Why Calendula Resin Matters (And Why Sticky Flowers Are a Good Thing)

If you've ever picked fresh calendula flowers, you may have noticed something unexpected.
Your fingers feel sticky.
That tacky feeling isn't sap or pollen—it's the flower's natural resin, and it's one of the reasons calendula has been valued in herbal skincare for centuries.
What is calendula resin?
Calendula resin is a naturally occurring, sticky substance found primarily around the green base of the flower head, known as the involucre, and on the flower bracts. As the flower matures and fully opens, tiny glandular structures produce this resin, giving the base of the bloom its characteristic tacky feel.
When I'm harvesting calendula for my infused oils, I always notice how sticky my fingers become. Some days it's just a light tackiness, while other days the resin is so abundant that my fingertips almost stick together. There have even been times when I've had to stop halfway through harvesting to wash my hands because they were so sticky I could barely pick another flower. It's one of those little things that reminds me just how much natural resin these beautiful blooms can produce.
I've even noticed bird feathers stuck to the stems and flower heads in the garden. The resin can be sticky enough to catch the lightest things as they brush past the plants—a fascinating reminder that this natural coating is very real.

Why is the resin important?
The resin contains many of the plant's naturally occurring lipophilic (oil-loving) compounds. These include triterpenoids, carotenoids, flavonoids, and other beneficial constituents that have made calendula one of the most respected herbs in traditional skincare.
Because these compounds dissolve readily into oil, calendula is especially well suited for oil infusions. Over time, the oil gently draws many of these beneficial constituents from the flowers.
This is one of the reasons I choose slow, traditional oil infusion rather than rushing the process.

Does every flower have resin?
Not to the same degree.
The amount of resin varies depending on the variety of calendula, growing conditions, weather, and the stage of bloom. I've found that flowers that are fully open—but not beginning to fade—often have the tackiest green base.
Every harvest is a little different because nature doesn't produce identical flowers.

Why I leave the whole flower intact
Many people think only the bright orange petals are valuable.
While the petals certainly contain wonderful plant compounds, I intentionally harvest and dry the entire flower head, including the green base where much of the resin is found.
For my infusions, I want to capture as much of what the plant naturally offers as possible.
Why I harvest by hand
Harvesting calendula isn't just about collecting flowers.
As I walk through the garden, I naturally select blooms that are fully open, healthy, and ready to pick. Harvesting by hand lets me notice the little details—the colour, the condition of the flower, and yes, that familiar sticky feeling on my fingertips.
It's a slower process, but one that allows me to work with each flower at exactly the right stage.

From garden to bottle
After harvesting, my calendula flowers are gently washed, carefully dehydrated, and slowly infused into oil over several weeks. During that time, I regularly hand-shake each infusion , allowing the oil to gradually extract the botanical compounds.
It's not the fastest way to make skincare.
But I've never been interested in fast.
I'd rather let the plants do what they've been doing for generations.
Every harvest leaves me with sticky fingers, and I wouldn't have it any other way. To me, that's one of nature's quiet reminders that these flowers are exactly where they should be—doing what they've done for centuries. My job is simply to honour that process and capture it, one infusion at a time.
