Infusion vs Extraction: Understanding Botanical Processes

It started with a simple comment — someone casually mentioning that they infuse their botanicals using alcohol and glycerin. Not as a challenge, and not as a debate. Just a different way of working.
It gave me pause, not because the method was unfamiliar, but because the same word — infusion — was being used to describe something quite different from what happens in my own process.
That moment felt worth paying attention to. It brought me back to the language we use, and how easily one word can hold many meanings depending on what’s actually happening behind the scenes.
This piece isn’t about deciding which method is better. It’s simply about understanding the differences between processes — and why those differences matter depending on how an ingredient will be used.
What Do We Mean When We Say “Infusion”?
In botanical skincare, the word infusion is often used in a broad, conversational way. It might describe botanicals resting in oil, steeped in alcohol, blended with glycerin, or worked with through a combination of solvents. All of these approaches involve drawing something out of a plant — but they don’t draw out the same things, and they don’t create the same kind of ingredient.
When we slow down and look a little closer, it becomes clear that the solvent, the timeline, and the intended use all shape the outcome. Understanding that context helps the word infusion make more sense, rather than less.

Oil Infusion: A Slow, Lipid‑Based Process
Oil infusion is a straightforward process that relies on time and consistency. Dried botanicals are placed in a carrier oil and left to rest, with gentle, regular movement. Over weeks, lipid‑soluble compounds gradually make their way from the plant material into the oil itself.
There’s no alcohol involved, no glycerin, and no water phase — just botanicals and oil working together at their own pace.
Because the medium is entirely oil, this approach results in an infusion that is:
Anhydrous by nature
Free from alcohol, glycerin, and added water
Well suited to balms, oils, and oil‑based skincare
Dependent on time rather than speed or force
This isn’t a fast process, and it isn’t meant to be. It’s about allowing the oil to change gradually as the botanicals share their properties over time.

Alcohol and Glycerin Extractions: Different Approaches, Different Outcomes
Alcohol and glycerin are also commonly used to work with botanicals, and they behave very differently than oil. Alcohol extracts a wide range of compounds relatively quickly and also acts as a preservative. Depending on the application, it may later be diluted, reduced, or blended into another formulation.
These approaches differ in part because:
Alcohol extracts efficiently and preserves by nature
Glycerin primarily draws out water‑soluble compounds
Water is often present at some stage of the process
End use frequently includes tinctures, soaps, or emulsified products
These methods are well established and very effective for certain applications. They’re simply designed with different goals in mind.

Why End Use Matters
Questions often come up when ingredients made for one purpose are considered for another. An extract created with alcohol or glycerin may work beautifully in soapmaking or emulsions, but it won’t behave the same way as an oil infusion in an anhydrous product.
Oil infusions are created with oil‑based formulations in mind from the very beginning. There’s no conversion step later on — the process and the end use are aligned from the start.
Time as Part of the Process
Oil infusion doesn’t rely on pressure or rapid extraction. It relies on consistency and duration. Time plays an active role.
As weeks pass, the oil slowly takes on changes in colour, aroma, and feel. Nothing is rushed, and nothing is forced. The process unfolds gradually, which is very much the point.
Not Better — Just Different
There isn’t a single right way to work with botanicals. Different methods exist because they serve different purposes.
When the process, the solvent, and the intended use are considered together, the result tends to make sense on its own terms. Oil infusion is simply one approach — rooted in patience, simplicity, and an appreciation for how plants and oils naturally interact.
Sometimes, understanding those differences is enough to bring clarity.
The words may overlap, but the processes behind them matter.
